In this series, I’m going to talk about Rails. But I’m also going to talk about myself; it’s rare for a person to just stumble into being a developer. Some of the people I’ve met along the way have stories about how their first computer was some amazingly archaic device, and they’ll talk about how they used it to invent their own programming language, or, like, create some sort of magical game, or world.
My story isn’t like that. I want it to be like that, but my parents could never afford a computer for a kid; sometimes, they could barely afford food.
I want anyone who reads this, to feel that it’s totally possible for them to make it in software development. I’m going to talk about where things can go wrong, but, I think it’s important to remember that a lot of things had to go right, to reach the point where the big worry of the day is proper construction of a Rails application. There are so many ways that we as developers live a charmed life.
So, I’m going to share my own history. Because there is something special about mindset of a software developer; I had to learn how to think, in a way that the kid who was programming at the age of nine, experienced in a very different way. In some ways, I’m a foreigner. Tech isn’t my native tongue. I think I have something to say, and maybe, by sharing my life, I can figure out what that is.
